From the Kansas Prairie where the buffalo roam...

If you're interested in anything and everything buffalo, you've come to the right place.

Hello! I'm Linda Hubalek, owner of Smoky Hill Bison Co. and Butterfield Books. I grew up on a Kansas farm, and always been involved in agriculture. Since 1997 I've been back to where my ancestors homesteaded, and raising bison on the land they roamed through before the settlers arrived to claim it. My husband Verne (who is part Cherokee), planted this farm back into grass for the buffalo to roam on again.

And just like the Native Americans who first lived in this area, we utilize the American Plains bison for our food, and they provide us with our livelihood. We specialize in everything buffalo from buffalo jerky to buffalo shoulder mounts to bison leather. We even have bison items for your pets too.

We have two herds, one of young bison bulls to provide our customers with buffalo meat, and bison by-products like buffalo hides and bison skulls. We ship direct from our farm to your front door. If you want to know where your meat food is coming from, then call to talk because the source is right outside my office window.

Our other buffalo herd is our "meet and greet" group that people see when they visit our farm's Visitors Center. We host motor coach groups, school field trips, and thousands of people during our Crop Maze and Pumpkin Patch activities. In our gift shop we sell bison burgers to buffalo steaks, buffalo toys, Native American art, books on buffalo, buffalo shirts, furniture with bison leather seats, and displays of buffalo products.

Its Past: Homesteaded on the Prairie

I also write about Kansas pioneers that settled this area, and publish books about them through my Prarie HomeButterfield Books Inc. book company. Centuries ago, buffalo and Native Americans passed over this hilltop land on their way down to the Smoky Hill River. Then the area was homesteaded in the late 1860s by Swedish immigrant families.

My Butter in the Well book series tells the story of the original family that homesteaded the farm in 1869 (where I grew up), and the lifetime work it took to establish the farm. My two other book series, Trail of Thread and Planting Dreams, tell how my father's and my mother's ancestors homesteaded on other Kansas farms in the 1800's. I also have quilt patterns to match too.

These days my writing is posted in my Farm diary. It will keep you in touch with the buffalo herd and the Kansas seasons.

Its Present: Buffalo are Roaming the Land again

Roaming BuffaloSo today the buffalo are back on the land enjoying life where they once grazed, and visitors from around the world stop in to see this magnificent Kansas symbol. Please stop by to see us when you're in the area.
