	Beaded Buffalo Skull-Black War Bonnet Society Beaded Black War Bonnet Society Design on a Buffalo Bull Skull. The design is a stylized depiction of the well-known eagle feather headdress as seen from the rear, with the feathers forming a circular sunburst pattern. Only highly respected leaders and warriors were allowed to wear this emblem of war medicine. In traditional Lakota culture, black represents death, danger and intense spiritual devotion. Black is the dominant color of the Black War Bonnet Society. The white of the design depicts life after death, the spirit world of the ancestors and past warriors. The sacred color of life is red, the color of blood. It repsents the path of proper conduct or the Red Road. This combination of colors symbolically stated that the owner would not depart from this life or go into the next until the proper time. When the Black War Bonnet Society design was placed on a buffalo skull and placed near a tipi or encampment, it identified the inhabitants as society members. The artist is a retired veterinarian who researches Native American history and creates bead work based on research. Beads are glued onto leather. Crated in an oversized box for safe shipping. 	Buffalo Skull with Arrowheads Bull skulls were an important part of sacred ceremonies of the Plains Native Americans. This skull design has imbedded mahogany obsidian arrowheads which are modeled after the Besant-type arowhead of the Muddy Creek Variety, common around 400 A.D. The points are arranged to represent the directons of the world, with a beaded star design in the middle. The horn cap base wraps are made of hair-on bison hide. The flint knapping was done by artist Tom Swaim, and his father, artist Steve Swaim does the beading and finish work on these skull pieces.
