Summer at the Bison Farm
It's the perfect time to visit our Visitors Center

First, enjoy the area’s growing crops on your country drive to our Visitors Center. You’ll see growing fields of corn, soybeans, and milo once you get off the Interstate exit. Look for cattle and horses grazing in pastures. Farmers may be harvesting wheat, or baling alfalfa as you drive by. This is a rare opportunity to see rural family agriculture up close.

Once you arrive to our Bison Farm, you can see the buffalo roaming in their green pasture that sits below the Visitors Center porch. You’re welcome to sit awhile and enjoy the view.

In our Gift shop you can select top quality bison steaks for a special barbeque, and buy unique buffalo items and Kansas souvenirs.

Wall displays tell the story of our herd, and how the Native American’s used the bison for their food, shelter and clothing. We have a special “show and tell’ basket that kids love to see and feel the bison items in.

I’m also the author of the Butter in the Well books about Kansas pioneers, and the Visitors Center has a photo display of the original homestead, which is nearby.

During the summer you can drive by the pumpkin patch and growing maze, and then plan to visit again in the fall to actually walk through the maze field.

Summer Tours

If you would like a closer view of the buffalo while at the Visitors Center, ask for a personal tour. We give tours out in the pasture (weather and personnel permitting) in our van during the summer.

The Cost: The tour is $5 for ages 13 and up, $3.50 for ages 3-12, and ages 2 and under is free sitting on an adult’s lap.

“Evening with the Buffalo”

There aren't anymore Saturday evenings available for this summer season, so plan to come out on the weekends from Sept. 27th to Oct. 26th for a Tram ride, walk through the maze and all the other fun fall activities.

The "Evening with the Buffalo” will resume June 2009.

Are you staying in Lindsborg or Salina for the weekend? Do you live in Kansas and have company to entertain?

Call us with your reservation, then venture out to the country for a relaxing Saturday evening at the Smoky Hill Bison Visitors Center. It doesn't matter if you are a single person, couple, or family- you'll just be included in the group, which might include a couple from California, to a family from North Carolina.

What's planned for the evening:

Our evening starts at 6 pm with a buffalo burger meal, and ends with a Prairie Tram tour into the herd. If bad weather does not permit us to take the tram into the pasture, we'll have a slide show presentation about our buffalo instead.

To make reservations:

Please call 1-800-790-2665 (local 785-667-2707) and reserve by credit card so we know you are coming, and that you have directions to our farm. Cancellations need to be called in by 3 pm on Saturday to avoid your credit card being charged for the meal that has been prepared for you.

The Cost:

The Cost for the evening is $14 for ages 13 and up, $10 for ages 3-12, and age 2 and under are free.

The Bison Farm is just 15 minutes from south Salina, so enjoy a mini-vacation in the country whenever you’re in the area. We’ll enjoy visiting and showing you around.
